Create an email template

In this article, we'll show you how to create an email from scratch, alternatively you can start with a prebuilt email template from the template gallery.

Build Your Email

  1. Go to Content > Email templates > Create Blank Template.

  2. Name your email and choose a default locale.

  3. Click Create Template.

  4. Enter a Subject Line and some Preview Text.

  5. Add and edit different elements, or try one of our prebuilt blocks.

  6. Add any variables to personalise your content.

Preview Your Email

Previews only give an indication of how your email will look to recipients. For a more accurate view, send test emails to see how it will render of different email clients and device types.

  1. From the email builder, click on the preview tab.

  2. Check the approximate size of your rendered email, emails larger than 100 KB may be clipped or fail to be delivered.

  3. Choose any contact or event to dynamically populate any variables in your email.

  4. Set any custom variables if you have added any.

  5. You can also switch between the desktop and mobile preview views in the editor to see how your email will look to recipients on different screen sizes.

Following these steps enables you to visualize your email directly in the email builder, providing a preview of how it may look across different email clients and devices. By viewing the email in this way, you can catch any formatting issues and ensure that the design is responsive and visually appealing. After making sure everything looks right in the preview, the best next step is to send a test email to your inbox. This allows you to experience the email exactly as your recipients would, ensuring all content, links, and dynamic variables render correctly before the final send.

Send a Test Email

  1. From the email builder, click Test Email.

  2. Set any custom variables if you have added any.

  3. Select the deliver email channel.

  4. Select the test recipient's email address, or a test list to send to.

  5. Click Send.

Save and Publish your Template

Not ready to use your email template yet? When you exit the email template editor, your template will be automatically saved as a draft.

Ready to use your template? Click Publish in the top right-hand corner.

Success! You've just published an email template.

Use your Email Template

Once your email template has been published, you can use it in a Campaign, in a Journey, or in a Flow.

Can't see your email template when you try to use it? Check to make sure you've published it.

Versioning

If you want to edit your email template after it's been published, clone the existing version, make your edits, and then publish it. The new cloned version will appear as a draft. Once this draft is published, the previous active version will become inactive. You can then safely delete this inactive version.
